CASO members umpire softball games for high schools,  recreational leagues in Montgomery County, the Central Maryland League, practice games for travel teams, and college club softball.  CASO also umpires slow-pitch, middle school games in the fall as well as a seniors’ slow-pitch league during the days.  In addition, CASO umpires officiate the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association Maryland state championship tournament plus work for various tournament organizations such as Softball Umpires of Maryland.

CASO umpires are trained in the National Federation of High School fast-pitch softball rules as well as proper field mechanics. They must pass the National Federation of High School exam before they can officiate high-school games. Not only are CASO umpires held to a high standard to officiate during the regular season by passing this exam, but also are held to an even higher measure to participate in the state playoffs.

The CASO season begins in early March with high-school scrimmages then games and runs through June when recreational leagues finish at the end of the school year. There are also some travel tournament teams that continue play throughout the summer. Fall softball for middle schools and recreational leagues runs from the middle of September to the end of October.  CASO also works college club softball games.
